Filipino enterprises join the global drive for sustainable futures
Harnessing innovative solutions for a sustainable future
Sustainable development has been one of the utmost priorities of countries across the world. As environmental threats, social inequalities, and economic instability are becoming more prevalent, the need for a universal response was put forth with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals.
A global call to action
Established by the United Nations (UN), the Sustainable Development Framework allows for the integration of concerted efforts to achieve the 17 Global Goals in a quest to end poverty, preserve the planet, and ensure long-term peace and prosperity for all. This mandate has sparked a worldwide shift.
European nations like Sweden and Finland are rapidly adopting circular economies, while global brands like IKEA and Patagonia have integrated climate-positive models into their supply chains. In Asia, powerhouses like Japan, South Korea, and Singapore are racing toward carbon neutrality by 2050, modernizing their urban centers and food systems. This universal shift has made sustainability a non-negotiable standard in global trade.
Leading the regional wave of environmental innovation, SDG Asia held its fourth annual exhibition at the Taipei World Trade Center on September 11–13, 2025. This premier event, attended by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), remains Asia’s largest platform for celebrating the businesses and initiatives driving the global green transition.
Philippine SDG Response
SDG efforts in the Philippines center on green technology, sustainable food trade, and eco-friendly packaging solutions of local enterprises. These innovative solutions are pivotal in ensuring that progress is made in addressing the current environmental, social, and economic concerns of the country.
Recognizing its crucial role in bringing together various stakeholders toward sustainable progress in the Philippines, CITEM, the export promotion arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), continuously promotes local food innovation and sustainable trade practices through IFEX Philippines. It is CITEM’s signature event where the cream of the crop of Philippine enterprises showcase their export-quality food products.
As CITEM takes pride in how its events, such as IFEX Philippines, have become strategic platforms for local businesses to display their ingenuity in meeting both their business goals while contributing to the SDG agenda, here are just some of the enterprises that are making a sustainable difference in the country’s food industry:
-
- OIKOS Sustainable Solutions Inc. – A pioneer in plastic-free packaging that partners with food merchants to transition toward a circular economy. Their corn and cassava-based bags provide businesses with a compostable alternative to single-use plastics.
- Seabeth Food Processing (Mang Kiko’s Cacao) – An artisanal chocolate manufacturer that strengthens the local cacao value chain by sourcing directly from community farmers. By working closely with growers, the company helps create more direct market linkages and value opportunities within cacao-producing communities.
- Fresh Start Organics – An advocate of the "farm-to-table" movement that acts as a consolidator for over 1,000 smallholder farmers in Negros Island. Their model is built on long-term partnerships that provide training, organic certification support, and a stable market for indigenous and organic produce.
CITEM fueling progress for sustainable food trade through IFEX Philippines
Through the years, IFEX Philippines has served as a consistent avenue for connecting local supply with the global demand for sustainable food trade. Since 2004, this yearly event has catered to over 700 participating companies, facilitating trade opportunities with approximately 10,000 international trade buyers, importers, and retailers in 2025.
Perpetuating and sharing best practices on sustainable solutions supportive of achieving the SDG agenda, CITEM walks the extra mile through its Sustainable Solutions Exchange (SSX). The SSX is a signature program of CITEM serving as an avenue to educate and promote sustainable solutions, resource management, and green technology in essential industries.
The 2026 SSX will be held concurrently with the 19th edition of IFEX Philippines on May 21-23, 2026, at the World Trade Center Metro Manila in Pasay City, Philippines.
